Red Red Wine è un brano originariamente scritto e pubblicato da Neil Diamond. La canzone venne ripresa nel 1983 dagli UB40 dove si parla dell’antidoto del vino rosso contro i pensieri
L’antidoto del vino rosso: Bere scioglie le inibizioni e la paura di non essere all’altezza delle aspettative del partner. Ma, alla lunga, finisce per alterare seriamente i meccanismi che accendono il rapporto. Bere, con moderazione, e per puro piacere, resterà sempre uno dei migliori momenti, anche e soprattutto in coppia. Nella puntata odierna di GastROCKnomia, il nostro viaggio vi porterà al 1983 e agli iconici UB40, autori in quell’anno di Red Red Wine, canzone pubblicata in origine da Neil Diamond ed estratta dall’album Just For You.
“Red Red Wine” narra, senza filtri, del tentativo maldestro di scongiurare un amore attraverso l’alcol, appunto l’antidoto del vino rosso contro i pensieri. Il protagonista, nonostante la speranza che il tempo avrebbe fatto dimenticare e ricucire le ferite, scopre che i ricordi di lei sono ancora vivi. Si rivolge al vino rosso come via di fuga, sfruttando l’effetto di altro consumo, per anestetizzare il dolore emotivo resettandone la memoria. Il ritornello della canzone, con il verso ripetuto “Red, red wine goes to my head, makes me forget that I still need her so”, sottolinea il ruolo che l’alcol gioca nella vita del protagonista.
I versi esprimono la lotta del protagonista per superare il passato: il tempo non guarisce le ferite ma l’alcool può mediare. Una nota positiva, nel testo, affonda nell’antidoto del vino rosso: “Red red wine, you make me feel so fine, you give me whole heap of zing” come stato di beatitudine da vino rosso. “Red Red Wine” parla di dolore intimo ma anche di voglia di sconfiggere i propri mostri. La voglia di rivalsa è tangibile.
La cover realizzata dagli UB40 non è solo una delle migliori rivisitazioni della recente storia musicale ma è anche un brano che ha sdoganato il classico significato del reggae: non più Peter Tosh e Bob Marley, ma anche una band inglese, bianca, formata a Birmingham nel 1977 (in piena epoca punk) capace di vendere 70 milioni di dischi piazzando, contestualmente, oltre 50 singoli all’interno della Official Singles Charts. Alla rivista NME ‘Astro’ Wilson, founder della band, recentemente scomparso, spiegò:
“Prima che arrivassimo noi, la gente guardava al reggae come Rastaman e metà degli inglesi bianchi non ne volevano sapere. In una certa misura questa cosa allontanò le persone dal reggae. Quando siamo usciti noi, solo il fatto che metà della band era bianca quando il reggae doveva essere solo per i Rasta, iniziarono a rendersi conto che il reggae è solo musica ed è lì per chiunque vuole ascoltarla e per vuole suonarla.”
L’antidoto del vino rosso… ma attenzione ricordatevi di bere con moderazione: il vino fa bene all’organismo e soprattutto alla salute del sistema cardiovascolare e cerebrovascolare. Sorseggiare poi un buon rosso è un piacere, meglio farlo ascoltando una della band più piacevolmente scorrette della storia. Alla prossima puntata.
